Rooted Motion™ Exercise-Based Psychotherapy in Columbus, Ohio
The Body Belongs in Therapy.
Some people come to Rooted Motion after years of therapy. Others have never sat across from a therapist at all. What they have in common is this: something isn't moving.
Maybe you understand yourself pretty well. Maybe you're just starting to look. Either way, you've noticed that thinking about it — or talking about it — hasn't been enough to actually shift it.
That's not a personal failing. It's a clue about where the work needs to happen.
Psychological struggles — anxiety, trauma, self-doubt, burnout — don't live only in our thoughts. They live in how we breathe, how we brace, how we move (or stop moving) when things get hard.
Rooted Motion works with the body directly. As you move, patterns show up in real time — the hesitation, the push-through, the shutting down. We work with those moments as they happen, not just as stories you tell about the past.
In every session, we track:
What your body is doing as you move — and what it's telling us
Where emotion activates, holds, or surfaces during effort
The patterns we name together: the hesitation, the push-through, the shutdown
What those moments mean in the context of your life
Movement brings it to the surface. Conversation makes sense of it. Both matter here.
What to Expect in a Rooted Motion Session
Check In: We start by talking. What's been going on, what's on your mind, what you want to focus on today. This sets the direction for everything that follows.
Move and Work Through It: As you engage in structured movement — strength work, cardio, boxing, or functional exercise — the therapeutic conversation continues alongside it. What comes up during the physical effort is part of the work. We pay attention to it together and make meaning of it in real time.
Come Back Down: We slow things down, reflect on what emerged, and connect it to what's happening in your life. You leave with something concrete — not just a good workout, but a clearer sense of what you're carrying and where you're headed.
Everything adapts: movement, pace, intensity, therapeutic focus. Rooted Motion begins where you are. You just have to show up.
Why Exercise-Based Therapy Works
Research consistently shows that exercise changes the brain. It increases blood flow, supports the neurotransmitters involved in mood and focus, and strengthens the brain's ability to adapt and learn.
Exercise also reduces stress reactivity and enhances emotional regulation. When that physiological shift happens inside a structured therapy session, it creates something traditional talk therapy can't replicate — emotions become more accessible, long-held patterns are easier to examine, and new responses can actually be practiced rather than just discussed.
In Rooted Motion, you don't just talk about resilience. You train it.

What It Costs
Rooted Motion is a private-pay service and does not accept insurance.
Exploration Session (first appointment) $195
Foundation Phase (3 sessions) $450
Ongoing Sessions $165 per session
No required commitment. Start with one session and go from there.
Rooted Motion works as a complete, standalone therapy — this can be the only therapy you're in. It also works well alongside existing treatment if you're already working with another provider and want to add a body-based, experiential dimension to that work. I can coordinate with your provider if helpful.
If you are seeking insurance-covered psychotherapy in Columbus, please visit Joshua Tree Therapy.
Exploration Session — $195 Your first appointment
This is where you experience Rooted Motion firsthand. We'll talk through what's going on for you, get you moving, and pay attention to what comes up when the body is part of the conversation. You'll leave with a clearer sense of your patterns and whether this approach is the right fit — whether you're brand new to therapy or you've been doing it for years.
Foundation Phase — $450 3 sessions — the recommended starting point
Where the real work begins. Over three focused sessions we:
Get clear on what you're navigating and what you want to shift
Identify how you respond to stress, pressure, and discomfort — in the room and in your life
Connect what shows up during movement to the patterns playing out outside of therapy
Begin actively practicing different responses rather than just talking about them
Most clients spread these over two to three weeks. Works well as a standalone start or running alongside existing therapy.
Ongoing Sessions — $165
This is where change compounds. Weekly tends to build the most momentum. Biweekly or monthly works well for a slower pace or when combining with regular talk therapy. You continue for as long as it's useful.
The Five G.E.A.R.S
G — Ground: Regulation and Safety
We start by helping your nervous system settle. Gentle movement, breathing, and low-intensity activity help you become more physically present and less caught in the mental noise that dominates daily life. Grounding can happen at the start of a session or whenever regulation is needed.
E — Engage: Activation and Emotional Contact
Moderate resistance and structured movement create a natural entry point for the harder stuff. Physical effort often softens the defenses that make it difficult to talk about certain things — and what surfaces during effort can be more honest than what surfaces in a chair.
A — Actualize: Capacity Building and Embodied Strength
This is about encountering your own capability in real time. When you push through something physically challenging, you're not just building strength — you're practicing the same qualities that carry you through hard things outside of therapy: persistence, focus, the willingness to keep going.
R — Release: Discharging Stress and Emotional Energy
The body holds accumulated tension. Dynamic movement — conditioning work, striking, exertion — gives that energy somewhere to go. Release can bring a sense of clarity or reset that's hard to reach through conversation alone.
S — Story: Reflection and Meaning Making
Movement surfaces things. This phase is about slowing down and making sense of what emerged — connecting what happened in your body to what's happening in your life. This is where the physical work becomes part of your evolving understanding of yourself.
Through this framework, change isn't just something you think about. It's something you experience, practice, and build — in motion.

Why I Created Rooted Motion
About Rooted Motion™
Rooted Motion began as something personal before it ever became something professional. I went through my own health journey--mentally and physically--and I didn’t find healing through insight alone. Movement became part of how I rebuilt myself. Exercise didn’t just change my body; it changed my relationship with stress, identity, and what I believed was possible.
Rooted Motion is the model I developed from that experience and from my clinical work. It integrates evidence-based therapeutic principles with structured movement when it fits the person and the goal. It’s not about becoming a fitness person. It’s about using the body as a doorway into regulation, resilience, confidence, and deeper self-trust
At the center of Rooted Motion is a simple idea: growth isn’t just something you think your way into. It’s something you practice. My work is rooted in helping people forge who they are, reconnect with their values, and move toward a life with real purpose--one step, one rep, one honest conversation at a time.
